The "Second English Competition for Catalan Schools"

ANNOUNCEMENT
The "Second English Competition for Catalan Schools” (THE FONIX 2009) is announced. The competition is organised by International House and Fundació Catalana de l’Esplai.
The competition is backed by “Direcció General d’ Innovació del Departament d’ Educació de la Generalitat de Catalunya”, as an activity which is organised “en el marc d’ iniciatives socials d’ accions d’ entorn i d’ activitats vers l’ exce.lència i en el Pla d’ Impuls de la llengua anglesa als centres educatius catalans".
The aim of the competition is to complement the plans for improving English language learning in catalan schools. Given the importance of English in our society, the objective of the competition is to stimulate and motivate students' interest in the language.
The test questions will be prepared by a renowned and prestigious team of education-related professionals. They will consist of a series of exercises in the areas of writing, listening and speaking in a non-threatening and collaborative way, throughout the three stages:
- LOCAL STAGE: Test at the educational centres.
- REGIONAL STAGE: Test with the representatives chosen by the schools, grouped by provinces.
- FINAL STAGE: Final Test with the winners from each province.
Neither the schools nor the competitors have to pay to participate in the competition.
Enrolment must be carried out at the schools through the person delegated as responsible for the competition (normally an English teacher). This person will organise the Local Test at the educational centre.
COMPETITION PARTICIPANTS:
The competition is designed for all students studying at public, private and semi-private regulated educational centres in Catalonia where the following educational levels are taught.
- LEVEL 1: 5th level of Primary School
- LEVEL 2: 6th level of Primary School
- LEVEL 3: 1st Secondary (1r d’ ESO)
- LEVEL 4: 2nd Secondary (2n d’ ESO)
- LEVEL 5: 3rd Secondary (3r d’ ESO)
- LEVEL 6: 4th Secondary (4rt d’ ESO)
- LEVEL 7: 1st year Pre-University (1r de BATX.) or Vocational Training (Cicle Mitjà Cicles Form.)
- LEVEL 8: 2nd year Pre-University (2n.de BATX.) or Vocational Training (Cicle Sup.Cicles Form.)
ENROLMENT DATES AND TEST DATES:
- 21st November - 31st December 2008: Enrolment of centres who wish to participate in the competition, using the attached enrolment form.
- 8th January - 9th February 2009: time period in which to carry out the English tests at the Local Stage of the competition in your educational centres.
- Up until 21st February 2009: the closure of the enrolment of finalists from the Local Stage who want to take part in the Regional Stage of the competition.
- Saturday 7th March 2009 at 12:00 o'clock: the Regional Stage will take place.
- From 30th March on, the winners of the Regional Stage will be published on the web-site.
- Before 10th April, centres must inform the competition organisers if they are not interested / can't take part in the Final Stage of the competition.
- Saturday 25th April 2009 at 12:00 o'clock:the Final Stage of the competition will take place.
- From 11th May, the final classifications of the winners at the Final Stage of the competition will be published.
- 22nd May 2009: the FONIX award ceremony of prizes and diplomas will take place.
Enrolment and information sent to and received from enrolled centres should be done through this website and by e-mail. Fax can be used as a form of communication ONLY when there has been a problem using online communication. Enrolment enquires should be sent to info@concurs-angles.info.
The location of the Regional Test and Final Test centres will be put up well in advance on the competition website by the organisers.
Prizes will be awarded to competition finalists, winners and each participating educational centre for the final stage.
